Metalizing vs Hot-Dip Galvanizing: The Differences You Need to Know

Metalizing and galvanizing are coating processes, commonly using molten zinc or any other metal, for restoring metal pieces or structure, creating a physical barrier of cathodic protection. Zinc is usually the most popular due to its anticorrosive capacity, durability and esthetic. On one hand, what you need to know about each process is, metalizing is about spreading molten zinc particles over the surface using a special tool that drives them over the piece creating a mechanical bond between the surface and the zinc. On the other hand, Hot-Dip galvanizing requires immersion into a hot bath of molten zinc with temperatures over 450oC.

  1. Finishing: the final product of the metalizing process is uniform and continuous. Contrary to the hot-dip galvanizing process, it might cause laminations and stains in some of your pieces.
  2. Equipment and workplace: metalizing equipment can be moved everywhere from one place to another without problem, however, hot kettles used for galvanizing cannot be moved. Usually, because of its size, the coating process must be done at the workplace. 
  3. Size: The metalizing process apply for structures or pieces of all sizes and shapes, meanwhile Hot-dip galvanizing is limited; pieces and structures must be measured and compared to bath size for galvanizing immersion. 
  4. Adherence and coating: structures consistency is almost perfect when the metalizing process is done; pieces can be coated or painted immediately and easily because the surface is porous enough to accept paint. Hot-Dip galvanizing also creates excellent adherence, however, laminations, puddles, and marble finish may appear in some pieces which is a disadvantage of the hot-dip galvanizing process when applying powder or liquid coating.
